The Diocese of Oakland under the leadership of the present bishop Most Rev. Michael Barber SJ has begun a Capital Campaign for the entire diocese of Oakland. This capital campaign is mainly to raise money to support the various programs of the diocese with a long time vision and planning. It is also to reduce the debt the diocese has incurred over the years on account of various projects and problems. St. Joachim church is a unit of the diocese of Oakland. We belong to the diocese of Oakland. As an organization, our church has no existence apart from the diocese. We share in its achievements and failures. We share in its concerns as much as we share in its strengths. A healthy and strong diocese will enable the leadership to take initiatives to fulfill the mission of Jesus – to proclaim the Gospel both in words and deeds, to impart our faith to our children and youth, to provide education to our less fortunate children and migrants, to provide counseling to couples who are struggling in their marital relationship, to care for the aged and dying etc. We were called to make a pledge for the coming four years. Even a minimum amount of one dollar per day will make $30 per month and $360 per year and $1440 for a period of four years! And together with the donation of those generous people who would be making a pledge for a greater amount, well, we could easily reach the goal set for us. However, the response to this request from our Bishop has been both good and bad. Some of the parishes have responded very positively. They have all ready collected what was expected of them. In a few parishes, the call of our Bishop has not received much success. Unfortunately, our parish falls under this category. The people in charge of this Capital Campaign are unable to understand why a parish like ours which is one of the very active parishes in the diocese has not risen to the occasion of helping the diocese in its need? Why only less than 150 families of the 3000 registered families of our parish have responded to the call of the Bishop? Maybe you waited for the New Year to begin to make the pledge and then forgot all about the pledge. It is not late. You can do it. As usual I did not wait for the last minute or for the beginning of the New Year. I sent my pledge card as soon as I heard the request from the diocese. I gratefully remembered what I received from God and His Church and in gratitude I wrote my pledge card and submitted it as soon as I got it. Can you not do that? Count your blessings and respond with generosity. I can assure you, you will not regret for doing it. Whatever you do to God and to His Church comes back to you a hundredfold. I have seen it in my life and in the life of my family.

La Diócesis de Oakland, bajo el liderazgo del actual Obispo Reverendo Michael Barber, SJ ha comenzado una Campaña Capital para toda la Diócesis de Oakland. Esta campaña es principalmente para recaudar fondos para apoyar los diversos programas de la Diócesis a un largo plazo de visión y planificación. También es para reducir la deuda que la Diócesis ha incurrido a través de los años por causa de diversos problemas y proyectos. La Iglesia de St. Joaquín es una unidad de la Diócesis de Oakland. Pertenecemos a la Diócesis de Oakland. Como organización, nuestra Iglesia no existiría aparte de la Diócesis. Compartimos sus logros y fracasos. Compartimos su preocupación tanto como compartimos en sus fortalezas. Una Diócesis sana y fuerte permitirá a los dirigentes a tomar iniciativas para cumplir con la misión de Jesús – proclamar el Evangelio tanto en palabras y acciones, para impartir la fe a nuestros niños y jóvenes, para proporcionar educación a los niños y migrantes menos afortunados, para brindar asesoramiento a las parejas que están luchando por su relación matrimonial, para cuidar de los ancianos y los que están muriendo, etc. Somos llamados a hacer una donación por los próximos cuatro años. Incluso una cantidad mínima de un dólar por día será $30 por mes, $360 por año y $1440 durante un período de cuatro años! Y juntos con la donación de esas personas generosas que están haciendo un compromiso de mayor cantidad, pues, podríamos fácilmente llegar a la meta fijada para nosotros. Sin embargo, la respuesta a esta petición de nuestro Obispo, ha sido tanto buena como mala. Algunas de las parroquias han respondido muy positivamente. Ya han recaudado lo que se esperaba de ellos. En otras parroquias, la llamada de nuestro Obispo no ha recibido mucho éxito. Por desgracia, nuestra parroquia cae bajo esta categoría. Los responsables de esta Campaña Capital son incapaces de comprender ¿por qué una parroquia como la nuestra, que es una de las parroquias en la Diócesis más activas, no ha logrado ayudar a la Diócesis en su necesidad? ¿Por qué solamente menos de 150 familias de las 3000 familias registradas de nuestra parroquia han respondido al llamado del Obispo? Puede ser que esperabas que el año nuevo empezara para hacer la promesa y luego se te olvidó la promesa. No es tarde. Puedes hacerlo. Como de costumbre no esperé el último minuto o para el comienzo del año nuevo. Envié mi tarjeta de compromiso tan pronto como escuché la petición de la Diócesis. Con gratitud me acordé de lo que he recibido de Dios y su Iglesia y en agradecimiento llené mi tarjeta de compromiso y la envié tan pronto cuando la recibí. ¿No puedes hacerlo tú también? Cuenta tus bendiciones y responde con generosidad. Puedo asegurarte, que no te arrepentirás por hacerlo. Hagas lo que hagas por Dios y su Iglesia vuelve a ti cien veces. Lo he visto en mi vida y en la vida de mi familia.
