Why Godparents?

So often this question is answered “ because the church said I had to have two ”, or “ my relative said I needed them ”; even more shocking answer, “ to care for the child if something happens to the parents ”. As a convert to Catholicism, I shuddered every time I heard that answer … I didn’t want to be a godparent if it meant something bad had to happen to the parents”. But, there is a historical reason for godparents. It is important to note that the Sacrament of Baptism is a 2000 – year – old sacrament within the church, and we continue the celebration as it has been for these past 2000 years. Therefore, we need to go back to the foundation of the Church to see the answer to this question”. As we journey back to the time after Pentecost, we need to visit a person living in Jerusalem who may never have heard of Jesus. However, he/she may have observed a neighbor or relative that was kinder or nicer that everyone else he/she knew. After a while, curiosity would set in, and the question “ what makes you nicer/kinder than others? ” might be asked. The answer would have been, “ I am a follower of The Way ” or “ I try to live my life as Jesus asks of me ”. After receiving an explanation of “ The Way ” or who Jesus is, the next question would be …” how do I get what you have? ” And the follower of Jesus then offers to bring the new person to the waters of baptism; becoming a “ sponsor ” or “ godparent ”. It is their example that brings others to Jesus and New Life in baptism”. So, the answer to “ why godparents ” is the same today as it has been for 2000 years … they are examples of faith in Jesus Christ. The Church will ask them to assist the parents in bringing up the child in the ways of the faith, following Jesus. They promise, out loud, that they will help the parents, as examples of faith, to teach the way of Jesus in the life of the child”. It is difficult for a godparent to say “ Yes ” if they don ’ t know or follow the faith. Which is why the church requests the godmother/godfather to be confirmed Catholics. This is why many parishes ask for a certificate that confirms the godparent ’ s sacraments. If they are a couple as godparents, they should also be in a sacramental marriage. To be a godparent is to be a gift to the child and their family”.
