Several years ago, a school teacher assigned to visit children in a large city hospital received a routine call requesting that she visit a particular child. She took the boy’s name and room number and was told by the teacher on the other end of the line, “We’re studying nouns and adverbs in his class now. I’d be grateful if you could help him with his homework, so he doesn’t fall behind the others.” It wasn’t until the visiting teacher got outside the boy’s room that she realized it was located in the hospital’s burn unit. No one had prepared her to find a young boy horribly burned and in great pain. She felt that she couldn’t just turn and walk out, so she awkwardly stammered, “I’m the hospital teacher, and your teacher sent me to help you with nouns and adverbs.” The next morning a nurse on the burn unit asked her, “What did you do to that boy?” Before she could finish a profusion of apologies, the nurse interrupted her: “You don’t understand. We’ve been very worried about him, but ever since you were here yesterday, his whole attitude has changed. He’s fighting back, responding to treatment . . . It’s as though he’s decided to live.” The boy later explained that he had completely given up hope until he saw that teacher. It all changed when he came to a simple realization. With joyful tears he expressed it this way: “They wouldn’t send a teacher to work on nouns and adverbs with a dying boy, would they?” [Parables, Etc. (Dallas: Word Publishing, 1991).] To know that someone believes in us makes all the difference in the world. The conviction that Jesus believed him caused the instant conversion of Zacchaeus.

There is a story about a local fitness center that was offering $1,000 to anyone who could demonstrate that they were stronger than the owner of the place. Here is how it worked. This muscle man would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and then hand the lemon to the next challenger. Anyone who could squeeze just one more drop of juice out, would win the money. Many people tried over time – other weightlifters, construction workers, even professional wrestlers, but nobody could do it. One day, a short and skinny guy came in and signed up for the contest. After the laughter died down, the owner grabbed a lemon and squeezed away. Then he handed the wrinkled remains to the little man. The crowd’s laughter turned to silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and six drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the manager paid out the winning prize and asked the short guy what he did for a living. “Are you a lumberjack, a weightlifter, or what?” The man replied, “I work for the IRS.” Today’s Gospel describes the conversion of a Jew who worked for the first-century Roman IRS.

A pastor was asked by one of the presidential candidates, “Name something my government can do to help your church if I am elected president.” The pastor replied, “Quit making one-dollar bills. The minimum denomination should be ten dollar bills. And the coins should be forbidden by a federal law near churches.”

Hace varios años, una maestra de escuela asignada a visitar niños en un hospital grande de la ciudad recibió una llamada de rutina para que visitara a un niño particular. Con lágrimas de alegría lo expresó de esta manera: “No mandan a una profesora para trabajar en sustantivos y adverbios a un niño moribundo, lo harían?” [Parábolas, Etc. (Dallas: Palabra Publica, 1991).] Saber que alguien cree en nosotros hace toda la diferencia del mundo. La convicción de que Jesús le creyó causó la inmediata conversión de Zaqueo.

Hay una historia acerca de un gimnasio local que ofrecía $1,000 a quien pudiera demostrar que eran más fuertes que el dueño del lugar. Aquí es cómo funcionaba. Este hombre musculoso exprimiría un limón hasta que todo el jugo cayera en un vaso y luego le daría el limón al próximo retador. Uno de los candidatos presidenciales le pregunto a un Pastor, “Nombre algo que mi Gobierno pueda hacer para ayudar a su Iglesia si yo soy elegido Presidente”. El Pastor respondió, “deja de imprimir billetes de un dólar. La denominación mínima debe ser billetes de diez dólares. Y las monedas deben ser prohibidas cerca de las Iglesias por una ley federal.”
