President John F. Kennedy was very fond of a particular story, which he often used to close his speeches during his 1960 presidential campaign. It is the story of Colonel Davenport, Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives back in the year 1789. One day, while the House was in session, the sky of Hartford suddenly grew dark and gloomy. Some of the Evangelical House representatives looked out the windows and thought this was a sign that the end of the world had come. Uproar ensued, with the representatives calling for immediate adjournment. But Davenport rose and said, “Gentlemen, the Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought.” Candles were brought and the session continued. Today’s readings contain the same message: we need always to be prepared to receive Jesus at his second coming by accepting him now as our personal Savior and doing now what he has commanded us to do.

When the bi-partisan 9/11 commission members made their final report to Congress, they begin their report with these words. “September 11, was a day of unprecedented shock and suffering in the history of the United States. The nation was unprepared. …. The 9/11 attacks were a shock, but they should not have come as a surprise.” What follows is a long list of warning signs that had been generally ignored by the Clinton and Bush administrations in their pursuit of other matters. Things have changed since then. Now the unofficial creed of the American Homeland war on terror is, “Be Vigilant, Be Watchful, and Be Prepared.” We must not be caught off-guard again. There are Christians who approach the coming of Christ the way the government deals with the war on terror. They ring out a danger and they announce a warning. With concern, they say, “You’d better get ready! You’d better watch out — because before you know it, Christ will come.”

A Sunday school teacher asked his class, “If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the Church, would that get me into Heaven ? “NO!” the children all answered. “If I cleaned the Church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?” Again, the answer was, “NO!” Again the teacher asked, “Well, then, if I were kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my wife, would that get me into Heaven ? Again, they all answered, “NO!” “Well then how can I get into Heaven?” A five-year-old boy shouted out, “YOU GOTTA BE DEAD!” Good insight for a five-year old!

Cuando los miembros de la comisión bipartidista del 9/11 hizo su informe final al Congreso, empezaron su informe con estas palabras. “El 11 de Septiembre fue un día de choque sin precedentes y sufrimiento en la historia de los Estados Unidos. La nación no estaba preparada. … Los ataques del 9/11 fueron un shock, pero no debe haber llegado como una sorpresa”. Lo que sigue es una larga lista de señales de advertencia que han sido generalmente ignoradas por las administraciones de Clinton y Bush en su búsqueda de otros asuntos. Las cosas han cambiado desde entonces. Ahora el credo no oficial de la Patria Americana de la guerra contra el terrorismo es, “Ser vigilante, estar vigilante y estar preparados”. No debemos ser encontrados desprevenidos otra vez. Hay Cristianos que miran la venida de Cristo como el gobierno aborda la guerra contra el terrorismo. Suena un peligro y anuncian una advertencia. Con preocupación, dicen, “¡será mejor que te prepares! Mejor cuídate — porque antes de darte cuenta, Cristo vendrá.”

Un maestro de escuela de catecismo le preguntó a su clase, “Si vendo mi casa y mi coche, tengo una gran venta de garaje, y doy todo mi dinero a la Iglesia, ¿llegaría al cielo?” ¡NO!” respondieron todos los niños. “Si limpio la Iglesia todos los días, corto el zacate y mantengo todo limpio y ordenado, ¿me iría al cielo?” Una vez más, la respuesta fue, “¡NO!” Otra vez el maestro preguntó, “bueno, entonces, si soy amable con los animales, le doy dulces a todos los niños, y amo a mi esposa, ¿me iría al cielo?” Una vez más, todos contestaron, “¡NO!” “Pues entonces ¿cómo puedo llegar al cielo?” Un niño de cinco años de edad gritó, “¡Tienes que estar muerto!” ¡Buena intuición para cinco años!
