As Vice-President, George Bush represented the U.S. at the funeral (November 15, 1982) of former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev who had been the president of the USSR for 18 years. Bush was deeply moved by a silent protest carried out by Brezhnev’s widow, Mrs. Viktoria Brezhnev. She stood motionless by the coffin until seconds before it was closed. Then, just as the soldiers touched the lid, Brezhnev’s wife performed an act of great courage and hope, a gesture that must surely rank as one of the most profound acts of civil disobedience ever committed: she reached down and made the sign of the cross on her husband’s chest. There in the citadel of secular, atheistic power, the wife of the man who had run it all hoped that her husband was wrong. She hoped that there was another life, that that life was best represented by Jesus who died on the cross, and that the same Jesus might yet have mercy on her husband. Today’s Gospel is Jesus’ teaching on the resurrection of the dead.

In one of his lighter moments, Benjamin Franklin (one of the most important Founding Fathers of the United States: author, political theorist, politician, printer, scientist, inventor, civic activist and diplomat), penned his own epitaph. It seems he must have been influenced by Paul’s teaching on the resurrection of the body. Here’s what he wrote: The Body of B. Franklin, the former printer lies here, food for worms, like the cover of an old book: its contents torn out, and stripped of its lettering and gilding. But the work shall not be wholly lost: for it will, as he believed, appear once more in a new & more perfect edition, corrected and amended by its Author.

A Sunday school teacher asked his class, “If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the Church, would that get me into Heaven? “NO!” the children all answered. “If I cleaned the Church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?” Again, the answer was, “NO!” Again the teacher asked, “Well, then, if I were kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my wife, would that get me into Heaven?” Again, they all answered, “NO!” “Well then how can I get into Heaven?” A five-year-old boy shouted out, “YOU GOTTA BE DEAD!” Good insight for a five-year old!

A singing group called “The Resurrection” was scheduled to sing at a Church. When a big snowstorm postponed the performance, the pastor fixed the outside sign to read, “The Resurrection is postponed.”

Como Vice-Presidente, George Bush representó a los Estados Unidos en el funeral (15 de Noviembre de 1982), del ex líder Soviético Leonid Brezhnev quien había sido el Presidente de la URSS durante 18 años. Bush se conmovió profundamente por una silenciosa protesta realizada por la viuda de Brezhnev, la Sra. Viktoria Brezhnev. Ella se quedó inmóvil al lado del ataúd hasta segundos antes de cerrarse. Entonces, tal y como los soldados tocaron la tapa, la esposa de Brezhnev realizó un acto de gran valor y esperanza, un gesto que seguramente queda enlistado como uno de los actos más profundos de desobediencia civil cometido: ella se agachó e hizo la Señal de la Cruz en el pecho de su marido. Allí en la ciudadela del poder laico, ateo, la esposa del hombre que había gobernado todo esperaba que su marido estuviera equivocado. Confiaba en que había otra vida, que la vida era mejor representada por Jesús, quien murió en la Cruz, y que el mismo Jesús todavía podía tener misericordia por su marido. El Evangelio de hoy es la enseñanza de Jesús sobre la resurrección de los muertos.

En uno de sus momentos más sutil, Benjamín Franklin (uno de los fundadores de los Estados Unidos más importantes: autor, teórico político, político, impresor, científico, inventor, activista cívico y diplomático), escribió su propio epitafio. Parece que debe haber sido influenciado por la enseñanza de Pablo sobre la resurrección del cuerpo. Aquí está lo que escribió: El cuerpo de B. Franklin, el impresor anteriormente aquí, comida para gusanos, como la portada de un libro viejo: su contenido arrancado y despojado de su rotulación y motor. Pero el trabajo no será enteramente perdido: por, como él creía, aparece una vez más en una edición nueva y más perfecta, corregida y enmendada por su Autor.

Un maestro de escuela Dominical le preguntó a su clase, “si vendiera mi casa y mi coche, tuviera una gran venta de garaje y diera todo mi dinero a la Iglesia, ¿llegaría al cielo? “¡NO!” respondieron todos los niños. “Si limpiara la Iglesia todos los días, cortara el césped y mantuviera todo limpio y ordenado, obtendría el cielo?” Una vez más, la respuesta fue, “¡NO!” Otra vez el maestro le preguntó, “bueno, entonces, si fuera amable con los animales y le diera dulces a todos los niños y amara a mi esposa, ¿me llevaría al cielo eso?” Una vez más, todos contestaron, “¡NO!” “Pues entonces ¿cómo podría irme al cielo?” Un niño de cinco años de edad gritó, “Tienes QUE ESTAR MUERTO!” ¡Buena sabiduría de cinco años!

Un grupo de canto llamado “La resurrección” estaba programado para cantar en una Iglesia. Cuando una gran tormenta de nieve pospone la actuación, el Pastor pone un rótulo afuera que dice, “Se pospone la Resurrección.”
