Not too many years ago, newspapers carried the story of Al Johnson, a Kansas man who repented of his sins and chose Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. What made his story so remarkable was the fact that, as a result of his newfound Faith in Christ, he confessed to a bank robbery he had participated in when he was nineteen years old. Because of the statute of limitations, Johnson could not be prosecuted for the offense. But because of his complete and total change of heart, he not only confessed his crime but voluntarily repaid his share of the stolen money! That’s repentance – metanoia — the radical change of heart demanded by John the Baptist in today’s Gospel.

In the Zen tradition of the Far East there is a story about a professor who went to visit the great master Nan-In one day. “Master,” he said, “teach me what I need to know to have a happy life. I have studied the Sacred Scriptures, I have visited the greatest teachers in the land, but I have not found the answer. Please teach me the way.” At this point Nan-In served tea to his guest. He poured his visitor’s cup full and then kept on pouring and pouring so that the tea began to run over the rim of the cup and across the table, and still he poured, until tea was cascading upon the floor. The professor watched this until he could not longer restrain himself. “It’s overfull! Stop! No more will go in!” he cried out. “Like this cup”, Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you the way unless you first empty your cup?” Let us empty our hearts of all the unnecessary and harmful stuff during these Advent weeks, clean it with tears of repentance and confession of sins, allow it to be filled with God and keep Him the center of our lives during Christmas and every day of the New Year

A middle-age woman is having a near-death experience in the operating room. She asks God if she is going to die. God says no and explains that she has another 30 to 40 years to live. With all those bonus years assured, she decides to make the most of them by staying on at the hospital to have an “extreme makeover.” She has a face-lift, liposuction, breast augmentation and a tummy tuck. She even changes her hair color to platinum blonde. As a “new” woman, she proudly sashays out of the hospital and is struck and killed by a speeding ambulance at the entrance. At the Pearly Gates she confronts God and tells him, “I thought you said I had another 30 to 40 years!” God replies, “Sorry, I didn’t recognize you.” The Jews didn’t recognize John the Baptist, not knowing if he was the herald or the Messiah himself.

No hace muchos años los diarios publicaron la historia de Al Johnson, un hombre de Kansas que se arrepintió de sus pecados y eligió a Jesucristo como su Señor y Salvador. Lo que hizo que su historia fuera tan notable fue el hecho de que, como resultado de su nueva fe en Cristo, confesó sobre un robo de banco del que había participado cuando tenía diecinueve años de edad. Debido al límite estatutario, Johnson no podía ser acusado por el delito. Pero debido a su completo y total cambio de corazón, no sólo confesó su crimen, sino que voluntariamente devolvió su parte del dinero robado! Eso es el arrepentimiento – metanoia – el cambio radical de corazón exigido por Juan el Bautista en el Evangelio de hoy.

En la tradición Zen del lejano Oriente existe una historia sobre un profesor quien fue a visitar al gran maestro Nan -In un día. “Maestro,” él dijo: “Enséñame lo que necesito saber para tener una vida feliz. He estudiado las Sagradas Escrituras, he visitado los más grandes maestros en la tierra, pero no he encontrado la respuesta. Por favor, enséñame el camino.” En este punto, Nan-In sirvió té a su huésped. Vierte la taza de su visitante y luego continúa vertiendo y vertiendo el té hasta que comenzó a derramarse sobre el borde de la copa y en la mesa, y todavía él continuaba vertiendo, hasta que el té caía como cascada sobre el suelo. El profesor miró esto hasta que ya no podía contenerse. “Está lleno! ¡Alto! No alcanza más!” gritó. “Como esta taza”, Nan-dijo: “Estás lleno de tus propias opiniones y especulaciones. ¿Cómo puedo yo mostrarte el camino a menos que primero vacíes tu taza?” Debemos vaciar nuestros corazones de todas las cosas innecesarias y perjudiciales durante estas semanas de Adviento, limpiémoslo con lágrimas de arrepentimiento y confesión de los pecados, permitamos que se llene con Dios y mantengámosle en el centro de nuestras vidas durante la Navidad y cada día del Año Nuevo.

Una mujer de mediana edad estaba teniendo una experiencia cercana a la muerte en el quirófano. Ella le pregunta a Dios si se va a morir. Dios dice que no y explica que ella tiene otros 30 a 40 años para vivir. Con todos esos años de bono seguros, ella decide hacer lo mejor de ellos y permanece en el hospital para hacerse un cambio extremo. Ella se hace una cirugía estética, liposucción, aumento de seno y una reducción de abdomen. Incluso se cambia su color de pelo a rubio platino. Como una “nueva” mujer, orgullosamente sale fuera del hospital y es atropellada por una ambulancia con exceso de velocidad en la entrada. En las puertas del cielo ella enfrenta a Dios y le dice, “Yo pensé que dijiste que tenía otros 30 o 40 años!” Dios responde: “Lo siento, no te reconocí.” Los Judíos no reconocen a Juan el Bautista, no sabían si era el heraldo o el Mesías mismo.
