A li’le girl was walking along a beach covered with thousands of starfish le( dying by the receding !de Seeking to help, she started picking up the dying starfish and tossing them back into the ocean. A man who watched her with amusement, said, “Li’le girl, there are hundreds of starfish on the beach. You cannot make a difference by pu*ng a few of them back into the sea.” Discouraged, she began to walk away. Suddenly, she turned around, picked up another starfish, and tossed it into the sea. Turning to the man, she smiled and said, “At least I made a difference to that one!” Today’s Gospel tells us how Mary, a village girl carrying Jesus in her womb, made a difference in the lives of her cousin Elizabeth and of the child in her womb. The child John, as he grew up, helped Mary’s Son to transform the history of mankind by preparing the way for the Messiah. The starfish story suggests that each person, no ma’er how unimportant, may truly benefit from our work, and that any service, however small, is valuable. The story also shows how seemingly hopeless problems can be solved by taking the first step.

In an issue of Catholic Digest some years ago Ms. Powers told about a creature called the “Advent Teufel.” Teufel is a German word for devil. According to an old German folktale, it is the Advent Devil who tries during the Advent season to keep people so busy in outward affairs that they lose sight of the real meaning of Christmas. The Advent Devil doesn’t want people to have !me to experience the rebirth of Christ within themselves. The tempta!ons of the Advent Devil are diabolically clever. He makes it so easy for us to go along with the flow of seasonal celebra!ons. The Advent Devil’s business is to keep us so busy with holiday obliga!ons that we forego daily prayer, Scripture study, and Church services. Some of us have been figh!ng the Advent Devil this year. Hopefully, we now have him under control. Just a couple more days. I hope you are in a posi!on to use that li’le bit of !me that’s le( to focus on the real meaning of it all.

Christmas telegram: The preacher and his pregnant wife had le( for a conference in France, forge*ng to give instruc!ons for the banner which was to decorate the hall at the Christmas Carol Concert, the following weekend. The parish secretary was astonished to receive a telegram from France which read simply: UNTO US A SON IS BORN. NINE FEET LONG AND TWO FEET WIDE. REV. AND MRS. JOHNSON.

Una niña caminaba por una playa cubierta con miles de estrellas de mar muriendo por la marea baja. Buscando ayudar, empezó a recoger las estrellas agonizantes lanzándolas hacia el océano. Un hombre que le miraba con amenidad, dijo: “niña, hay cientos de estrellas de mar en la playa. Tu no puedes hacer la diferencia lanzando algunas de ellas de regreso al mar.” Desanimada, ella comenzó a caminar. Repen!namente, ella dio una vuelta, recogió otra estrella de mar y la arrojó al mar. Girando hacia el hombre, ella sonrió y dijo: “al menos hice una diferencia a esa!” El Evangelio de hoy nos cuenta cómo María, una chica de pueblo que cargaba a Jesús en su vientre, hizo una diferencia en las vidas de su prima Isabel y del niño en su vientre. El niño Juan, cuando creció, ayudó al Hijo de María para transformar la historia de la humanidad, preparando el camino para el Mesías. La historia de las estrellas sugiere que cada persona, no importa lo poco importante, realmente puede beneficiarse de nuestro trabajo y, que cualquier servicio, cuan pequeño, !ene valor. La historia nos muestra como problemas aparentemente desesperantes, pueden ser resueltos tomando el primer paso.

En un ar%culo de Catholic Digest hace algunos años la Sra. Powers conto sobre una criatura llamada el “Teufel de Adviento”. Teufel es una palabra Alemana para diablo. Según un an!guo cuento popular alemán, es el Diablo de Adviento quien intenta durante el !empo de Adviento mantener a la gente tan ocupada en asuntos exteriores para que pierdan de vista el verdadero significado de la Navidad. El Diablo de Adviento no quiere que la gente tenga !empo para experimentar el renacimiento de Cristo dentro de sí mismos. Las tentaciones del Diablo de Adviento son diabólicamente inteligentes. Él hace tan fácil para nosotros ir junto con el flujo de las celebraciones de la temporada. La tarea del Diablo de Adviento es mantenernos tan ocupados con las obligaciones de las celebraciones, que renunciamos la oración diaria, el estudio Bíblico y los servicios de la Iglesia. Algunos de nosotros hemos estado luchando con el Diablo de Adviento este año. Esperemos que, ahora lo tengamos bajo control. Sólo un par de días más. Espero que estés en condiciones de u!lizar el poco de !empo que queda para centrarte en el verdadero significado de todo.

Telegrama de Navidad: el predicador y su esposa embarazada se habían ido a una conferencia en Francia, olvidando dar instrucciones para la bandera que decoraría la sala en el Concierto de Villancicos de Navidad el fin de semana siguiente. La secretaria de la parroquia se sorprendió al recibir un telegrama desde Francia que decía simplemente: ENTRE NOSOTROS UN HIJO HA NACIDO. NUEVE PIES DE LARGO Y DOS PIES DE ANCHO. EL REVERENDO Y LA SRA. JOHNSON.
