Egyptian pyramids are world-famous as one of the “seven Wonders” of the ancient world. But they are actually gigantic tombs containing the mummified bodies of Egyptian Pharaohs. Westminster Abby is famous, and thousands visit it because the dead bodies of famous writers, philosophers and politicians are entombed there. Taj Mahal in India is world famous for its beautiful architecture. But it is tomb of one of the Mogul princesses. But there is the Shrine of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, and pilgrims from all over the world visit a tomb there which is empty with a note at its entrance which says, “He is not here.” It is famous because Jesus Christ who was once buried there rose from the dead, leaving an empty tomb as he had told his disciples he would. Thus, he worked the most important miracle in his life, defying the laws of nature and proving that He is God. We rejoice at this great and unique event by celebrating Easter. Easter is the greatest and the most important feast in the Church for three reasons: 1) The Resurrection of Christ is the basis of our Christian Faith. It is the greatest of the miracles, for it proves that Jesus is God. That is why St. Paul writes: “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain; and your Faith is in vain” (I Cor 15: 14). “Jesus is Lord, He is risen” (Rom 10: 9), was the central theme of the preaching of the Apostles. No founder of any religion has an empty tomb as Jesus has. Further, neither the Jews nor the Romans could disprove Jesus’ Resurrection by presenting the dead body of Jesus. 2) Easter is the guarantee of our own resurrection. Jesus assured Martha at the tomb of Lazarus: “I am the Resurrection and the Life; whoever believes in Me will live even though he dies” (Jn 11: 25-26). 3) Easter is a feast which gives us hope and encouragement in this world of pain, sorrows and tears. It reminds us that life is worth living. It is our belief in the Real Presence of the Risen Jesus in our souls, in His Church, in the Blessed Sacrament and in Heaven that gives meaning to our personal as well as our communal prayer and strength to fight against temptations and freedom from unnecessary worries and fears. Joseph of Arimathaea was a very wealthy Pharisee, a member of the council, and a secret follower of Jesus. It was Joseph who went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body after the crucifixion. And it was Joseph who supplied the tomb for Jesus’ burial. I wonder if someone pulled him aside and said, “Joseph that was such beautiful, costly, hand-hewn tomb. Why on earth did you give it to someone else to be buried in?” “Why not?” Joseph might have answered. “He only needed it for the weekend.”

Las Pirámides de Egipto son famosas mundialmente como una de las “siete maravillas” del mundo antiguo. Pero son realmente tumbas gigantescas que contienen los cuerpos momificados de los Faraones Egipcios. Westminster Abby es famoso, y miles lo visitan porque los cadáveres de famosos escritores, filósofos y políticos se encuentran allí. Taj Mahal en la India es famosa por su hermosa arquitectura. Pero es la tumba de una de las princesas de Mogul. Pero es el Santuario del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén, donde peregrinos de todo el mundo visitan la tumba que está vacía con una nota en la entrada que dice: “No está aquí.” Es famoso porque Jesucristo, que una vez fue enterrado allí resucito de entre los muertos, dejando la tumba vacía como Él les había dicho a sus discípulos que lo haría. Así, trabajó el milagro más importante en su vida, desafiando las leyes de la naturaleza y demostrando que Él es Dios. Nos regocijamos en este gran y único evento celebrando la Semana Santa. La Semana Santa es la fiesta más grande e importante en la Iglesia por tres razones: 1) La Resurrección de Cristo es la base de nuestra Fe Cristiana. Es el mayor de los milagros, porque demuestra que Jesús es Dios. Es por esto que San Pablo escribe: “Y si Cristo no resucitó, nuestra predicación no tiene contenido, como tampoco la fe de ustedes.“(1 Co 15:14). “Porque te salvarás si confiesas con tu boca que Jesús es Señor y crees en tu corazón que Dios lo resucitó de entre los muertos.” (Rom 10:9), fue el tema central de la predicación de los Apóstoles. Ningún fundador de cualquier religión tiene una tumba vacía como Jesús. Además, ni los Judíos ni los Romanos pudieron refutar la Resurrección de Jesús presentando el cuerpo muerto de Jesús. 2) La Semana Santa es la garantía de nuestra propia resurrección. Jesús le aseguró a Martha en la tumba de Lázaro: “Yo soy la resurrección y la vida. El que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá “(Jn 11: 25-26). 3) La Semana Santa es una fiesta que nos da esperanza y aliento en este mundo de dolor, penas y lágrimas. Nos recuerda que la vida es digna de ser vivida. Es nuestra creencia en la Presencia Real de Jesús Resucitado en nuestras almas, en Su Iglesia, en el Santísimo Sacram ento, y en el Cielo, lo cual da sentido a nuestra oración personal y comunitaria, y la fuerza para luchar contra las tentaciones y la libertad de preocupaciones y temores innecesarios. José de Arimatea era un Fariseo muy rico, miembro del Consejo y discípulo secreto de Jesús. Fue José quien fue a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús después de la crucifixión. Y fue José quien proveyó la tumba para el entierro de Jesús. Me pregunto si alguien le jaló a un lado y dijo: “José, que tumba tan hermosa, costosa, y tallada a mano. ¿Por qué usted no se la dio a otra persona para ser enterrado en ella?” “¿Por qué no?” José podría haber respondido. “Él sólo la necesitaba por un fin de semana.”
