The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, and one of the applicants, who was not known to be the brightest academically, was called in for an interview. “Okay,” began the sheriff, “What is 1 and 1?” “Eleven,” came the reply. The sheriff thought to himself, “That’s not what I meant, but he’s right.” Then the sheriff asked, “What two days of the week start with the letter ‘T’?” “Today and tomorrow.” replied the applicant. The sheriff was again surprised over the answer, one that he had never thought of himself. ” “Now, listen carefully: who killed Abraham Lincoln?” asked the sheriff. The job-seeker seemed a little surprised, then thought really hard for a minute and finally admitted, “I don’t know.” The sheriff replied, “Well, why don’t you go home and work on that one for a while?” The applicant le% and wandered over to his pals who were waiting to hear the results of the interview. He greeted them with a cheery smile, “The job is mine! The interview went great! First day on the job and I’m already working on a murder case!” In our Gospel reading this morning from Luke 4 it is Jesus’ first day on the job. Immediately he is confronted with three major temptations centering on the key question: why can’t you take the crown without the cross?

A little boy always went next door to play even though his mom had warned him against doing so. This worried his mom so badly that she asked him why he was so disobedient. He replied that Satan tempted him so bad and he did not know what to do. His mom then advised him to say ‘Get behind me Satan’ whenever he was tempted. She then built a fence around the house. This worked for a week, then one sunny afternoon his mom looked out the window and there was her son playing on the neighbor’s lawn having cut a hole in the fence. “Jeremy”, she yelled, “come here!” She then said, “Did I not tell you to say ‘Get behind me Satan’ whenever he tempted you?” “Yes”, the boy replied, “I said, ‘Get behind me Satan’, then he went behind me and pushed me through the hole in the fence.”

El sheriff fue sorprendido otra vez por la respuesta, que nunca había pensado el mismo. “Ahora, escucha con atención: ¿Quién mató a Abraham Lincoln?” preguntó el sheriff. El solicitante del empleo parecía un poco sorprendido, entonces pensó realmente un minuto y finalmente admitió, “No sé”. El sheriff respondió: “Bueno, ¿por qué no vas a casa y trabajas en eso durante un tiempo?” El solicitante se fue con sus amigos quienes esperaban escuchar los resultados de la entrevista. Saludó con una sonrisa alegre, “el trabajo es mío! La entrevista fue gran éxito! Primer día en el trabajo y ya estoy trabajando en un caso de asesinato!” En nuestra Lectura del Evangelio de esta mañana en Lucas 4, es el primer día de trabajo de Jesús. Inmediatamente se enfrenta con tres tentaciones principales que se centra en la pregunta clave: ¿por qué no puede tomar la corona sin la Cruz?

Un niño iba siempre al lado a jugar a pesar de que su madre le había advertido contra ello. Esto le preocupo tanto a su mamá que ella le preguntó por qué era tan desobediente. Él respondió que Satanás le tentaba tanto que no sabía qué hacer. Su madre entonces le aconsejó decir “Aléjate de mí Satanás” cuando fuera tentado. Luego construyó una cerca alrededor de la casa. Esto funcionó durante una semana, y una soleada tarde su madre miró por la ventana y allí estaba su hijo jugando en el césped de su vecino habiendo recortado un agujero en la cerca. “Jeremy”, ella gritó, “¡ven aquí!” Ella dijo: “¿no te dije que dijeras “aléjate de mí Satanás” cuando él te tentara?” “Sí”, respondió el muchacho, “le dije, ‘aléjate de mí Satanás’, luego se fue detrás de mí y me empujó a través del agujero en la cerca.”
