There is a story about a sophomore who worked in the library at Princeton, New Jersey to earn money to help with his education. One night about closing time, he was walking around the empty halls of the library when he noticed in the very back corner amid an old stack of books, an old man reading and taking notes furiously. The old man was very intent. The librarian became a little curious so he went back to the old man and said, “My, what are you studying so intently?” The old man looked up long enough to say, “Well, I’m a student of physics.” The young librarian said, “Well, last year I took a course in physics and I think I have all I need for an understanding of physics.” He then turned and walked back to his desk. You can imagine his chagrin a few minutes later when the old man checked out some books, and on his library card was the name Albert Einstein. God’s call is a calling to a process, not to a single task. Today’s Scripture readings about the calls of Isaiah, Peter and Paul remind us that our calling is to a lifelong process of obedience, service and surrender to God in which we grow daily more like Jesus. There is nothing in the world more joyful than that. There is nothing in the world more challenging.

A man had spent fruitless day fishing. He didn’t want to go home empty-handed. He decided to stop at a local fish market. “I’d like three good sized fish,” he said to the clerk. “But before you wrap them, toss them to me, one by one.” The clerk looked puzzled at his request, “Sir? That’s a strange thing to ask.” Smiling the man said, “This way I’ll be able to tell my wife truthfully that I caught them!”

The pastor was a fisherman, but he hadn’t fished in months. One perfect Sunday morning he couldn’t resist. He called up his associate priest and claimed he had laryngitis. The priest then headed out to his favorite spot. The hook hadn’t been in the water five minutes before he got a strike, and landed the biggest fish he had ever caught – although he had seen bigger ones caught by others. A half hour later, he caught the biggest fish he had ever seen. Another forty-five minutes later he landed a fish that broke the world record. All this time St. Peter and God have been watching the priest from heaven. St. Peter turned to God, and said, “How can you reward this priest? He lied. He doesn’t observe the Sunday obligation.” God smiled at St. Peter, and replied, “I’m punishing him.” St. Peter was confused, so God continued, “Well, after he finishes, whom can he tell his story to?”

El viejo estaba muy concentrado. El bibliotecario un poco curioso se volvió al anciano y le dijo: “¿qué estás estudiando tan intensamente?” El anciano lo miró solamente el tiempo suficiente para decir: “Soy un estudiante de física”. El joven bibliotecario dijo: “Bueno, el año pasado tomé un curso de física y creo que tengo todo lo que necesito para comprender la física.” Entonces se volvió y caminó hacia su escritorio. Te puedes imaginar su asombro unos pocos minutos después cuando el anciano prestó algunos libros, y en su tarjeta de biblioteca estaba el nombre de Albert Einstein. El llamado de Dios es un llamado a un proceso, no a una sola tarea. Las lecturas de las escrituras de hoy sobre el llamado de Isaías, Pedro y Pablo nos recuerdan que nuestro llamado es a un proceso permanente de obediencia, servicio y entrega a Dios en el que crecemos cada día más como Jesús. No hay nada mejor en el mundo que eso. No hay nada más difícil en el mundo.

Un hombre pasó un día infructuoso pescando. No quería volver a casa con las manos vacías. Decidió parar en un mercado de pescado local. “Quiero tres peces de un buen tamaño”, le dijo al empleado. “Pero antes de envolverlos, lánzalos a mí, uno por uno.” El empleado lo miró desconcertado con su petición, “Señor, esa petición es algo extraña”. Sonriendo el hombre dijo, “de esta manera voy a poder decirle a mi esposa la verdad que los pesqué!”

El pastor era un pescador, pero él no había pescado en meses. Una mañana perfecta de Domingo no pudo resistir. Él llamó a su sacerdote asociado y afirmó que tenía laringitis. El sacerdote entonces se dirigió a su lugar favorito. El gancho no había estado en el agua cinco minutos antes de que él consiguiera una mordida y agarró el pez más grande que jamás había pescado – aunque él había visto más grandes capturados por otros. Media hora más tarde, pescó al pez más grande que jamás había visto. Otros cuarenta y cinco minutos más tarde agarró un pez que batió el récord mundial. Todo este tiempo San Pedro y Dios habían estado observando al sacerdote desde el cielo. San Pedro se dirigió a Dios y dijo: “¿Cómo puede usted recompensar a este sacerdote? Él le mintió. Él no observa la obligación del Domingo”. Dios le sonrió a San Pedro y respondió: “Estoy castigándolo”. San Pedro estaba confundido, así que Dios continuó, “Bueno, después de que termine, a quien le puede contar su historia?”
