A certain king was to visit a village under his rule and the villagers decided to contribute, each man a jar of wine, for the royal feast. All the wine was to be poured into a big barrel from which it would be served. One man thought to himself: With all the men in the village each pouring a jar of wine into the barrel, what difference would it make if I poured in a jar of water and save my wine. A jar of water among so much wine would hardly make any difference. Unfortunately, he was not the only man in the village who thought that way. When the king arrived and the barrel of wine was ready to be served, it was discovered to be full of water and very little wine. Many other men in the village too had contributed water instead of wine, thinking that it did not matter, since other people’s contributions would make up for their not contributing.
Some time back when I read this story I laughed a while. As it is the case with every moral story, after a while the truth of the story dawned on me. Whenever there is a common need and we are requested to help out, we all agree that we all should help out. And the needed amount seems well within our limit. But when the time comes for us to make the contribution, suddenly there arises in our heart some kind of unwillingness. Then we begin to rationalize and justify our sudden lack of interest with so many reasons such as – Oh, I just recently came to America, my neighbor is earning more than me, there are so many rich people in my parish, I am an unregistered member of this parish, I am undocumented etc. But can we wait to repair the Bell Tower till everybody gets equal salary? Can we stop repairing our restroom till we all get a more expensive car? Can we stop paying to our employees till our other concerns are settled?
People like me who have come from countries where we are used to get money from well to do countries to repair and to maintain the facilities still think that the church can get money from well to do country to maintain its facilities. Fortunately God has brought us to the most well to do county. While the environment has changed, unfortunately our mentality has not changed. When I worship in this beautiful church, I gratefully think of the people who donated from their income to build this beautiful church and to maintain its facilities. God has brought me to this wonderful land. Now it is my duty to contribute to maintain and to preserve this church and all its facilities without looking for excuses not to contribute. It is in giving for the common good our true character comes out.

Un cierto rey fue a visitar un pueblo bajo su dominio y los aldeanos decidieron contribuir, cada uno un vaso de vino para la fiesta real. El vino fue vertido en un barril grande del cual iban a servir. Un hombre pensó a sí mismo: con todos los hombres del pueblo cada uno vertiendo un vaso de vino en el barril, qué diferencia hará si vierto una jarra de agua y guardo mi vino. Un vaso de agua entre tanto vino apenas haría alguna diferencia. Desafortunadamente, él no fue el único hombre del pueblo que pensó de esa manera. Cuando llegó el rey y el barril de vino estaba listo para ser servido, se descubrió que estaba lleno de agua y muy poco de vino. Muchos otros hombres del pueblo también habían contribuido agua en lugar de vino, pensando que no importaba, puesto que las contribuciones de otras personas compensarían su falta de contribución.
Hace un tiempo cuando leí esta historia me reí un rato. Como es el caso con cada historia moral, después de un tiempo me percate de la verdad de la historia. Siempre que hay una necesidad común y nos piden ayuda, todos estamos de acuerdo que todos debemos ayudar, y la cantidad necesaria parece dentro de nuestras posibilidades. Pero cuando llega el momento para hacer la contribución, de repente surge en nuestro corazón una especie de falta de voluntad. Entonces comenzamos a racionalizar y justificar nuestra repentina falta de interés por muchas razones tales como: Oh, recientemente llegue a Estados Unidos, mi vecino está ganando más que yo, hay muchos ricos entre la gente de mi parroquia, no soy miembro registrado de esta parroquia, soy indocumentado etc. ¿Pero podemos esperar para reparar la Torre del Campanario hasta que todos tengan igual sueldo? ¿Podemos dejar de reparar el baño hasta que todos consigamos un coche más caro? ¿Podemos dejar de pagar a nuestros empleados hasta que se asientan nuestras otras preocupaciones?
Personas como yo que vienen de países donde estamos acostumbrados a recibir dinero de los países de bien para reparar y mantener las instalaciones, todavía creen que la Iglesia puede conseguir dinero de los países de bien para mantener sus instalaciones. Afortunadamente Dios nos ha traído al país de más bien. Mientras que el entorno ha cambiado, desgraciadamente nuestra mentalidad no ha cambiado. Cuando celebro en esta hermosa Iglesia, pienso con gratitud sobre la gente que donó de su ingreso para construir esta hermosa Iglesia y mantener sus instalaciones. Dios me ha traído a esta tierra maravillosa. Ahora es mi deber contribuir para mantener y preservar esta Iglesia y todas sus instalaciones sin buscar excusas para no contribuir. Es dar por el bien común cuando sale nuestro verdadero carácter.
