Some of the memorable events in my life as a priest have taken place during the last six years that I have been the pastor of St. Joachim parish, Hayward. One such incident took place on Friday, January 27th 2017. I was informed by our office secretary that a couple who are celebra”ng their 74th wedding Anniversary would like to receive my blessings in their house since they are unable to come to the church to receive my blessings. As I entered their house, the couple and their children warmly welcomed me. Contrary to my expecta”on, the couple looked healthy and was able to move around and speak clearly. Looking at the way the couple looked, I could immediately sense that this is a very special couple. A#er the prayer and blessing I asked the couple whether they could tell me the story of their life. The man introduced himself as Rufino Or”z and 102 years old. He introduced his wife’s name as Maxima and 95 years old. While studying in Manila, Mr. Rufino Or”z heard of a girl from his village who is also studying in a nearby ins”tu”on. So he went to visit her. Frequent visits soon turned into love. Finally the couple married in Urdaneta Catholic church on January 27, 1943. Mr. Rufino Or”z began to work as a as a teacher and went on to become the Registrar of Pacifican college and later the Principal of Pacifican College in Urdaneta in Pangacinan province. During the World War II he joined the US army and fought against the Japanese. A#er the war he studied law and became a lawyer. Later he was chosen and appointed as a judge and worked in that posi”on for many years. With a smile on his lips he recalls that during his career as a judge, so many “mes people offered him huge amount of money in order to get a favorable verdict. He said that he always resisted all such tempta”ons as he was aware that such corrupt prac”ces will have its consequences on the life of his children in the later stage. The couple feels so grateful to God for all His blessings in their life. The couple proudly says that God has blessed them with 8 loving and caring children, 23 grand children and 4 great grand children. Poin”ng to his wife Mrs. Maxima, Mr. Rufino Or”z said that his wife was a very intelligent woman. If she had desired she could have occupied important posi”ons in the society. But she chose to remain as a primary school teacher so that she could be always near to him and to take care of the children. A#er he had completed narra”ng his life story, I asked Mr. Rufino Or”z a final ques”on. I asked, “Mr. Rufino, what do you think is the secret of your long life?” Without hesita”ng a moment he put his arm around his wife who was si&ng nearby, looked at her and said, “My beau”ful wife.” Mrs. Maxima immediately turned to Mr. Rufino and said, “my handsome husband.” I could hardly hold my tears looking at a man who can call his 95 years old wife as beau”ful wife and a woman who can call her 102 year old husband as handsome husband. What a treasure we have in our parish. May God bless our parish with many such Rufinos.

Algunos de los eventos memorables en mi vida como Sacerdote han tenido lugar durante los últimos seis años que he sido Párroco de la parroquia de San Joaquín, Hayward. Uno de esos momentos tuvo lugar el Viernes, 27 de Enero de 2017. Fui informado por la Secretaria de la oficina que una pareja, celebrando su 70 aniversario de boda, quería recibir mis bendiciones en su casa ya que no son capaces de venir a la Iglesia para recibirlas. Cuando entré en su casa, la pareja y sus hijos me recibieron calurosamente. Contrariamente a mis expectativas, la pareja se miraba saludable y eran capaces de moverse y hablar claramente. Mirando la forma como la pareja se veía, inmediatamente sentí que se trataba de una pareja muy especial. Después de la oración y la bendición le pregunté a la pareja si me podría contar la historia de su vida. El hombre se presentó como Rufino Ortiz de 102 años de edad. Introdujo el nombre de su esposa como Máxima de 95 años de edad. Mientras estudiaba en Manila, el Sr. Rufino Ortiz escuchó sobre una muchacha de su pueblo que también estaba estudiando en una institución cercana. Así que fue a visitarla. Frecuentes visitas pronto se convirtieron en amor. Finalmente la pareja se casó en la Iglesia Católica de Urdaneta el 27 de Enero de 1943. El Sr. Rufino Ortiz comenzó a trabajar como maestro y llegó a ser el Secretario del Colegio Pacifican y más adelante el Principal del Colegio Pacifican de Urdaneta en la provincia de Pangacinan. Durante la II Guerra Mundial se unió al ejército de Estados Unidos y luchó contra los japoneses. Después de la guerra estudió derecho y se convirtió en un abogado. Más tarde fue elegido y nombrado como juez y trabajó en esa posición durante muchos años. Con una sonrisa en los labios, recuerda que durante su carrera como juez, muchas veces las personas le ofrecieron grandes cantidad de dinero para obtener un veredicto favorable. Dijo que él siempre había resistido esas tentaciones porque era consciente de que tales prácticas corruptas tendrían consecuencias en la vida de sus hijos en la etapa posterior. La pareja se siente muy agradecida con Dios por todas sus bendiciones en su vida. La pareja dice con orgullo que Dios los ha bendecido con 8 hijos amorosos y bondadosos, 23 nietos y 4 bisnietos. Señalando a su esposa la Sra. Máxima, el Sr. Rufino Ortiz dijo que su esposa era una mujer muy inteligente. Si ella hubiera deseado, ella podría haber ocupado posiciones importantes en la sociedad. Pero ella eligió permanecer como maestra de escuela primaria para poder estar siempre cerca de él y cuidar de los niños. Después de que él había terminado de narrar la historia de su vida, le pregunté al Sr. Rufino Ortiz una pregunta final. Le pregunté, “Sr. Rufino, ¿qué crees que es el secreto de su larga vida?” Sin dudarlo ni un momento puso su brazo alrededor de su esposa que estaba sentada cerca, miró y dijo, “Mi bella esposa.” La Sra. Máxima inmediatamente miró al Sr. Rufino y dijo: “mi marido guapo.” Apenas pude contener mis lágrimas mirando a un hombre que puede llamar a su mujer de 95 años de edad como una mujer hermosa y a una mujer que puede llamar a su marido de 102 años como un marido guapo. Qué tesoro tenemos en nuestra parroquia. Que Dios bendiga a nuestra parroquia con muchas más parejas como los Rufinos.
