There have been many persons given exciting commissions in their lifetimes. There was Michelangelo’s commission to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Sir Christopher Wren’s commission to build St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, Walter Reed’s assignment to stop yellow fever at the “Big Ditch” in Panama, Chamberlain’s orders to stop the Confederates at Little Roundtop in Gettysburg and most recently the mission of the U.S. Navy Seals to get the terrorist master-mind, Bin Laden, dead or alive. But I tell you, in my life and yours, there is an even greater commission. It is found here in Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus Christ turns to his disciples and says, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

There is the funny story of the raw army recruit standing at attention on the drill field. The drill instructor yells, “Forward, march!” And the entire ranks begin to move, all except this one raw recruit. He’s still standing there at attention. So the drill instructor strolls over to him and yells in his right ear, “Is this thing working?” “Sir, yes, sir!” The recruit yells. Then the drill instructor walks around to the other ear and yells, “Is this thing working?” “Sir, yes, sir!” The soldier says. “Then why didn’t you march when I gave the order?” “Sir, I didn’t hear you call my name.” Some of us are like that soldier standing around waiting for God to call our names. But the great commission given by Jesus on the day of his Ascension is a blanket order. It has everyone’s name on it. And you can be sure that the man in charge says, “Go! Make disciples! Teach!” It is your mission and my mission.

The Ascension mission to preach the Gospel: After attending a convention led by Billy Graham a woman wrote to him. “Dear Sir, I feel that God is calling me to preach the Gospel. But the trouble is that I have twelve children. What shall I do?” The televangelist replied: “Dear Madam, I am delighted to hear that God has called you to preach the Gospel. I am even more delighted to hear that He has already provided you with a congregation in your own home.”

The Ascension walk-out: There was a long-winded pastor who preached salvation history from Genesis to Revelation in every sermon. On the feast of Ascension as he reached Isaiah, he remarked that the prophet said nothing about the Ascension of Our Lord. He asked his audience, “What shall we do with him?” One old man in the front seat said, “He can have my seat, Father, I am leaving.”

Ha habido muchas personas quienes han recibido comisiones emocionantes en su vida. Hubo una Comisión a Miguel Ángel para pintar el techo de la Capilla Sixtina, una Comisión a Sir Christopher Wren para construir la Catedral de San Pablo en Londres, asignación a Walter Reed para detener la fiebre amarilla en la “Gran Zanja” en Panamá, las órdenes a Chamberlain para detener a los Confederados en Little Roundtop en Gettysburg, y recientemente la misión de la Marina Armada de Estados Unidos para capturar al terrorista principal, Bin Laden, vivo o muerto. Pero te digo, en mi vida y la tuya, hay una comisión mayor. Se encuentra en Mateo 28:18-20 donde Jesucristo se vuelve hacia sus discípulos y dice: “Por tanto, vayan y hagan discípulos de todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, enseñándoles a obedecer todo lo que les he mandado a ustedes.”

Hay una historia divertida de un recluta nuevo del ejército, parado en atención en el campo de entrenamiento. El instructor de entrenamiento grita, “Marcha hacia adelante!” Y las filas enteras empiezan a moverse, todos excepto este recluta nuevo. Todavía está parado allí en atención. Así que el instructor de entrenamiento camina a su alrededor y le grita en su oído derecho, “Esta cosa funciona?” “Sí, Señor sí!” El recluta le grita. Luego el instructor camina alrededor de la otra oreja y grita, “Esta cosa funciona?” “Sí, Señor sí!” Dice el soldado. “Entonces ¿por qué no marchaste cuando di la orden?” “Señor, no te escuché llamar mi nombre.” Algunos de nosotros somos como ese soldado esperando que Dios llame nuestros nombres. Pero la gran comisión dada por Jesús en el día de su Ascensión es una orden abierta. Tiene el nombre de todo el mundo. Y usted puede estar seguro de que el hombre a cargo dice: “¡Ve! ¡Haz discípulos! Enseña!” Es su misión y mi misión.

La misión de la Ascensión de predicar el Evangelio: Después de asistir a una convención dirigida por Billy Graham una mujer le escribió. “Estimado Señor, siento que Dios me está llamando para predicar el Evangelio, pero el problema es que tengo doce hijos. ¿Qué hago?” El telepredicador respondió: “Estimada Señora, me complace escuchar que Dios le ha llamado para predicar el Evangelio. Me alegro aún más al oír que Él ya le ha dado una congregación en su propia casa.”

La Ascensión de afuera: Había un Pastor que predicaba la historia de la salvación desde el Génesis hasta el Apocalipsis en cada sermón. En la fiesta de la Ascensión cuando llegó a Isaías, comentó que el Profeta no dijo nada sobre la Ascensión de Nuestro Señor. Le pregunto a su audiencia, “¿Qué hacemos con él?” Un hombre en el asiento delantero, dijo, “Puede tomar mi asiento Padre, yo me voy”.
