An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife, enjoying his extended family. He would miss the pay check, but he needed to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career. When the carpenter finished his work the employer came to inspect the house. He handed the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said, “My gift to you!” The carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then with a shock we realize we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over, we’d do it much differently. But we cannot go back. Build wisely!

An associate pastor, new to the parish, saw the need to start a Bible study group where people could learn to read the word of God and deepen their faith. After service one morning, he presented the idea to the people and received a unanimous and enthusiastic feedback. “It is a wonderful idea,” they all said. Then the young associate pastor went and told the pastor that the people were happy with the idea of starting a Bible class. The older and more experienced pastor told the associate to rephrase the question and consult the people again. The following day the young priest asked the same congregation, “Who would like to sign up for the Bible study group? Only four hands went up. Then it dawned on the young man that saying yes to an idea is one thing and doing what is required is another.

Jack worked in the lumberyard for twenty years and all that time he’d been stealing the wood and selling it. At last his conscience began to bother him and he went to confession to repent. “Father, its 15 years since my last confession and I’ve been stealing wood from the lumber yard all these years,” he told the priest. “I understand my son,” says the priest. “As penance can you make a novena?” Jack said, “Yes Father, if you have the plans ready, I’ve enough lumber.”

Little John watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face, “Why do you do that, mommy?” he asked. “To make myself beautiful,” said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue. “What’s the matter?” asked little Johnny. “Giving up?”

Él perdería el cheque, pero necesitaba re!rarse. Podría mantenerse. El contra!sta lamentaba perder a su buen trabajador y le preguntó si podría construir una sola casa más como un favor. El carpintero dijo que sí, pero con el !empo fue fácil ver que su corazón no estaba en su trabajo. Había recurrido a una mala calidad de mano de obra y a materiales inferiores. Fue una manera desafortunada para poner fin a una carrera dedicada. Cuando el carpintero terminó su trabajo el empleador vino a inspeccionar la casa. Le entregó la llave de la puerta principal al carpintero. “Esta es tu casa”, dijo, “Mi regalo!” ¡El carpintero se sorprendió! ¡Qué pena! Si solamente hubiera sabido que estaba construyendo su propia casa, lo habría hecho todo tan diferente. Así es con nosotros. Construimos nuestras vidas, un día a la vez, a menudo poniendo menos que nuestro mejor esfuerzo en la construcción. Luego en choque nos damos cuenta que tenemos que vivir en la casa que hemos construido. Si pudiéramos hacerlo de nuevo, lo haríamos diferentemente. Pero no podemos ir hacia atrás. ¡Construye sabiamente!

Un Pastor Asociado, nuevo a la parroquia, vio la necesidad de iniciar un grupo de estudio de Biblia donde las personas podían aprender a leer la Palabra de Dios y profundizar su fe. Después del servicio de una mañana, él presentó la idea a la gente y recibió una respuesta unánime y entusiasta. “Es una idea maravillosa”, todos dijeron. Entonces el joven Pastor Asociado fue y le dijo al pastor que la gente estaba feliz con la idea de iniciar una clase de Biblia. El Pastor más viejo y más experimentado le dijo al Asociado que reformulara la pregunta y le consultara a la gente otra vez. ¿Al día siguiente el joven Sacerdote le preguntó a la misma congregación, “a quien le gustaría inscribirse en el grupo de estudio de Biblia? Sólo cuatro manos subieron. Entonces el joven se percató que diciendo sí a una idea es una cosa y hacer lo que se necesita es otra.

Por úl!mo su conciencia comenzó a molestarle y se fue a confesión a arrepen!rse. “Padre, hace 15 años desde mi úl!ma confesión y he estado robando madera de la yarda de la madera todos estos años,” le dijo al Sacerdote. “En!endo mi hijo,” dijo el Sacerdote. “Como penitencia puedes hacer una novena?” Jack dijo: “Sí padre, si usted !ene los planos listos, tengo suficiente madera.”
