Ms. Teresa Gutierrez – one of the great daughters of St. Joachim Parish journeyed to take her permanent residence in heaven on Sunday July 8th at 1.00 am at the ripe age of 103. She was surrounded by all her loving children when she peacefully passed away. She had been very closely associated with St. Joachim Parish right from the very beginning of our parish. She took immense pride in coming to St. Joachim church every day early in the morning itself and arranging everything needed to be done in the sacristy and in the church for the priest to celebrate the morning mass. After the mass she watered all the plants around the church and saw to that the place around the church was neat and clean before going back to her house. The priests trusted her so much that she was given the key of the church and even the secret code of every locker in the church.
Teresa Gutierrez was born on August 13, 1913 at Sahuayo in Michoacán, Mexico. As she did not like going to school she studied only up to 2nd grade. The persecution against the Church which took place in Mexico when she was a child left a deep impression on her. She was a witness to the death of many Christians who were hanged for refusing to give up their faith. She vividly remembered the days when she used to run with her childhood friends to see the dead bodies of Christians who were hung for their faith. The life sacrifice of such martyrs made her to become stronger in her faith in Christ and in his Church. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Society and the Franciscan III order in her parish and actively participated in all its activities. Prior to her marriage twice she was elected Raina de Sahuayo.
In 1936 she married Mr. Manuel Gutierrez whose family ran a bakery. Teresa too, learned the art of making bread and helped in the family business. In 1961 the family moved to USA and settled down in Hayward. She was deeply loved by her husband who never allowed her to work outside. As for her, her dream life came to an end when her husband died in the year 2005. God had blessed the couple with seven children – four boys and three girls. Ms.Teresa Gutierrez took great pride in saying that God had blessed her with 16 grand children, 28 great grand children and 4 great great grand children. The sight of a 102 year old woman sitting near the altar and silently reciting the rosary every Sunday prior to the 12.15 pm mass was so very inspiring to everyone who knew her. When we reconstructed our Bell Tower, she greatly surprised the pastor by placing in his hand $10,000 as her contribution to the reconstruction of the Bell Tower. Ms. Teresa is indeed a beautiful jewel of St. Joachim Parish. May God grant her the eternal reward of being with Him forever. May her life and commitment to Jesus and His church be an inspiration to every one of us. May God abundantly bless all her family members.

Sra. Teresa Gutiérrez – una de las grandes hijas de la parroquia de San Joaquín viajó para tomar su residencia permanente en el cielo el Domingo, 8 de Julio a la 1:00am a la edad de 103años. Ella estaba rodeada de todos sus hijos amados cuando falleció pacíficamente. Ella tuvo lazos muy estrechos con la parroquia de San Joaquín desde los inicios de nuestra parroquia. Sentía un orgullo inmenso al venir a la Iglesia San Joaquín todos los días temprano en la mañana y ella misma organizaba todo lo necesario para la sacristía y la Iglesia para que el Sacerdote celebrara la Misa de la mañana. Después de la Misa ella regaba las plantas alrededor de la Iglesia y aseguraba que el lugar alrededor de la Iglesia estuviera aseado y limpio antes de volver a su casa. Los Sacerdotes confiaban tanto en ella, que le dieron la llave de la Iglesia y aun el código secreto de cada casillero en la Iglesia.
Teresa Gutiérrez nació el 13 de Agosto de 1913 en Sahuayo, Michoacán, México. Como a ella no le gustaba ir a la escuela, estudió solamente hasta el 2do grado. La persecución contra la Iglesia que tuvo lugar en México cuando era una niña, dejó una profunda impresión en ella. Ella fue testigo de la muerte de muchos cristianos que fueron ahorcados por negarse a renunciar a su fe. Vívidamente, recordó los días cuando solía correr con sus amigos de la infancia al ver los cadáveres de los cristianos que fueron ahorcados por su fe. El sacrificio de la vida de estos mártires hizo fuerte su fe en Cristo y en Su Iglesia. Ella era un miembro del Sagrado Corazón de la sociedad y la orden Franciscana III en su parroquia, y participó activamente en todas sus actividades. Antes de su matrimonio, fue elegida Reina de Sahuayo dos veces.
En 1936 se casó con el Sr. Manuel Gutiérrez cuya familia operaba una panadería. Teresa también, aprendió el arte de hacer pan y ayudó en la empresa familiar. En 1961 la familia se trasladó a Estados Unidos y se instalaron en Hayward. Ella fue profundamente amada por su marido quien nunca le permitió trabajar afuera. En cuanto a ella, su vida de sueño llegó a su fin cuando su marido murió en el año 2005. Dios había bendecido a la pareja con siete hijos – cuatro varones y tres mujeres. La Sra. Teresa Gutiérrez orgullosamente decía que Dios la había bendecido con 16 nietos, 28 bisnietos, y 4 tataranietos. Ver a una mujer de 102 años cerca del altar y en silencio rezando el Rosario todos los Domingos antes de la Misa de 12:15pm era muy inspirador para todos los que conocía. Cuando reconstruimos nuestro campanario, sorprendió sobremanera al Pastor colocando en su mano $10,000 como su contribución a la reconstrucción de la torre del campanario. La Sra. María Teresa es una joya preciosa de la parroquia de San Joaquín. Que Dios le conceda la recompensa eterna de estar con Él para siempre. Que su vida y su compromiso con Jesús y Su Iglesia sea una inspiración para cada uno de nosotros. Que Dios bendiga abundantemente a todos los miembros de su familia
