From the Pastor’s Desk: When the President or Prime Minister of a country is scheduled to make a public appearance, his staff prepares weeks and even months in advance to make certain that the proper protocol will be observed and the leader’s security will be assured. Similarly, detailed preparations precede the appearance of religious leaders like the Pope. Programs are scheduled, choral presentations are practiced, gifts are bought, and special persons are chosen to present them in the most gracious manner possible, so that the honored one is duly recognized and appreciated. Careful planning also accompanies the appearances of other political figures, celebrity entertainers and rock singers. When rock stars like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen made a tour, elaborate preparations were made for their coming. In fact, one wonders if today’s Gospel about John the Baptist proclaiming the coming of Jesus applies more to modern rock stars than it does to the true Messiah. Only when we put the same care and commitment into our spiritual Christmas preparations that rock stars put into their musical performances will “all mankind begin to see the salvation of God.”

A blizzard hit the Kansas prairie. Two feet of snow drifted to five and six feet in places. The telephone rang in the doctor’s home. The time had come for John Lang’s wife to have her baby. But it was impossible for the doctor to get through those drifts. John Lang called his neighbors: Can you help the doc to get through? In no time, from all directions, came men and boys with plows and shovels. They labored with all their might almost for two hours until finally the old doc was able to make it, just in time to deliver the Lang boy. Today, to all of us comes a call from another Father, God the Father through His prophet Isaiah and repeated by Jesus’ own cousin John the Baptist: “Make ready the way of the Lord.” But we are called, not to remove piles of snow, but piles of sin, neglect, thoughtlessness, the things that make it difficult and often impossible for the divine child to be reborn to our hearts and lives. A soap manufacturer and a pastor were walking together down a street in a large city. The soap manufacturer casually said, “The Gospel you preach hasn’t done much good, has it? Just observe. There is still a lot of wickedness in the world, and a lot of wicked people, too!” The pastor made no reply until they passed a dirty little child making mud pies in the gutter. Seizing the opportunity, the pastor said, “I see that soap hasn’t done much good in the world either; for there is much dirt still here, and many dirty people are still around.” The soap man said, “Oh, well, soap only works when it is applied.” And the pastor said, “Exactly! So, it is with the Gospel.”

Semejantemente, las preparaciones detalladas preceden a la aparición de líderes religiosos como el Papa. Programas están preparados, presentaciones corales se practican, se compran regalos y las personas especiales son elegidas para presentarlos de la manera más graciosa posible, para que el honor sea debidamente reconocido y apreciado. Una planificación cuidadosa también acompaña las apariciones de figuras políticas, actores famosos y cantantes de rock. Cuando las estrellas de rock como Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson y Bruce Springsteen realizaron una gira, preparativos fueron elaborados para su llegada. De hecho, uno se pregunta si el Evangelio de hoy sobre Juan el Bautista anunciando la venida de Jesús se aplica más a estrellas de rock moderno que al verdadero Mesías. Solamente cuando ponemos el mismo cuidado y compromiso en los preparativos de Navidad espirituales que las estrellas de rock ponen en sus actuaciones musicales, es cuando titodos los hombres comienzan a ver la salvación de Dios.

Una tormenta de nieve golpeó la pradera de Kansas. Dos pies de nieve se desvió a los cinco y seis pies en lugares. El teléfono sonó en casa del doctor. Había llegado el momento de la esposa de John Lang para tener a su bebé. Pero era imposible para el médico pasar esas derivas. John Lang llamó a sus vecinos: ¿puedes ayudar al doc a pasar? En un momento, desde todas las direcciones, vinieron hombres y muchachos con arados y palas. Hoy en día, todos recibimos una llamada de otro padre, Dios Padre a través de su profeta Isaías y repetido por el primo de Jesús Juan el Bautista: “Prepara el camino del Señor.” Pero estamos llamados, no para quitar montones de nieve, sino montones de pecado, negligencia, irreflexión, las cosas que hacen dittcil, y a menudo imposible, para que el Divino Niño renazca en nuestros corazones y vidas. Un fabricante de jabón y un Pastor caminaban juntos por una calle en una ciudad grande. El fabricante de jabón dijo casualmente: ti¿El Evangelio que predicas no ha hecho mucho bien, verdad? Sólo observa. Todavía hay mucha maldad en el mundo, y un montón de gente malvada tambiénti” El Pastor no dio ninguna respuesta hasta que pasaron por donde un niño sucio haciendo pasteles de lodo en la cuneta. Aprovechando la oportunidad, el Pastor dijo: tiveo que el jabón no ha hecho mucho bien en el mundo porque hay mucha suciedad todavía aquí, y mucha gente sucia todavía.” El hombre del jabón dijo: tiOh, el jabón solo funciona cuando se aplica.” Y el Pastor dijo, ti¡exactamenteti Así es con el Evangelio.
