It was a hot day in July 1969 on board an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Sailors with binoculars were searching the sky above the carrier. Suddenly they let out a yell. There, orange and white parachutes exploded and bloomed in the blue sky. Dangling from them was a ball-like shape. It was the Apollo II space capsule. Minutes later the capsule plunged into the warm water of the Pacific. The splashdown climaxed a voyage that had put three men on the moon. When the smiling astronauts emerged from the capsule, President Nixon danced a little jig on the carrier deck. He had flown halfway around the world to witness this history-making moment. He said the splashdown climaxed the greatest week in the world since creation. In the exciting months ahead, the three astronauts made a good will tour around the world. They visited 23 countries in 45 days. One of the “most striking moments of the trip,” said Astronaut Ed Aldrin, was to visit the Vatican. The astronauts were especially moved by the unusual gifts presented them by Pope Paul VI. Writing in his book Return to Earth, Ed Aldrin says: “His Holiness unveiled three magnificent porcelain statues of the Three Wise Men. He said that these three men were directed to the infant Christ by looking at the stars and that we three also reached our destination by looking at the stars.” (Mark Link in Sunday Homilies).
While they were talking about the story of the three wise men, a woman asked her parish priest this question, “Do you know why God gave the star to the wise men?” When he professed his ignorance, she told him: “God knows men are too proud to ask directions. If there had been three wise women instead of three wise men, they would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and given some practical gifts!”

A helicopter was flying around above Seattle yesterday when an electrical malfunction disabled all the aircraft’s electronic navigation and communications equipment. Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter’s position and course to steer to the airport. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, drew a handwritten sign, and held it in the helicopter’s window. The pilot’s sign said “Where am I?” in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said “You are in a helicopter.” The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to Sea-Tac airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how the “You are in a helicopter” sign helped determine their position. The pilot responded, “I knew that had to be the Microsoft building because, similar to their help-lines, they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer.”

Allí, paracaídas naranja y blanco estallaron y florecieron en el azul del cielo. Colgando de ellos había una figura de bola. Era la cápsula del espacio de Apolo II. Minutos después la cápsula se hundió en las cálidas aguas del Pacífico. El chapoteo terminó un viaje que había llevado a tres hombres a la luna. Cuando los astronautas sonrientes emergieron de la cápsula, el Presidente Nixon bailó un pequeño son sobre la cubierta del portador. Él había volado hasta la mitad del mundo para presenciar este momento histórico. Dijo que el chapoteo terminó la semana más grande en el mundo desde la creación. En los próximos meses emocionantes, los tres astronautas realizaron una gira alrededor del mundo. Visitaron 23 países en 45 días. Si hubieran sido tres mujeres sabias en vez de tres Reyes Magos, ellas hubieran pedido direcciones, hubieran llegado a tiempo, ayudado con el parto del bebé, limpiado el establo, cocinado una cacerola y dado algunos regalos prácticos!”

Un helicóptero estaba sobrevolando alrededor de Seattle ayer cuando un malfuncionamiento eléctrico desactivó la navegación electrónica del avión y equipo de comunicaciones. Debido a las nubes y la neblina, el piloto no pudo determinar la posición y curso del helicóptero para dirigirse al aeropuerto. El piloto vio un edificio alto, voló hacia él, dio vuelta en círculo, dibujó un cartel escrito a mano y lo mostró en la ventana del helicóptero. La nota del piloto decía “¿Dónde estoy?” en letras grandes. Las personas en el edificio rápidamente respondieron a la aeronave, dibujaron un gran cartel y la mostraron en la ventana del edificio. Su letrero decía “Estás en un helicóptero”. El piloto sonrió, saludó, miró su mapa, determinó el curso para dirigirse al aeropuerto Sea-Tac y aterrizó a salvo. Después que aterrizaron, el copiloto le preguntó al piloto cómo el cartel de “Usted está en un helicóptero” le ayudó a determinar su posición.
