Of the many volunteers who help in the smooth running of our church, Mass Coordinators are very special. Because all the activities in our church is finally geared to the celebration of the Eucharist which the Vatican II calls it as “the source and the summit of the Christian life.” It is the Mass Coordinator who delegates, prepares and oversees all the arrangements prior to the celebration of the Eucharist. St. Joachim Church has been blessed with some amazing Mass Coordinators and their assistants who meticulously carry out their responsibilities. I thank every one of them. May God abundantly bless them and their families.
One such Mass Coordinator had been Mrs. Dolly Cassel. She had been the Mass Coordinator of Sunday 7.30 am Mass. She took pride in being a Mass Coordinator and carried out the responsibility in a very unassuming manner. She had the special knack of getting everyone involved in getting things ready. All her assistants loved her and she in turn looked at each one of them as though they were some very special people. One could never hear any negative remark from her about anybody. She was a true treasure to St. Joachim church. Therefore, on a Sunday morning at the age of 92 when she came and told me that she would like to retire from the position of the Mass coordinator, I told her, “Dolly, you can retire only when you die.” Being such a great soul, she took my words very seriously and continued to carry out her ministry with usual cheerfulness. However, one Sunday morning I saw her sitting on the chair – very unusual of her character. So I asked her, “Dolly, are you all right?” She told me, “You know Father, this morning I got up at 3.00 am and I was afraid that if I go to bed again I may not get up in time to come for the morning mass. So I took bath immediately and waited till 7.00 am and came to the church.” Her words broke my heart and immediately I told her, “Dolly, it is now time for you to retire from being a Mass Coordinator.” She graciously accepted my suggestion. However, even at that frail age she continued to carry the Eucharist to the sick and home bound. One of her last act prior to her death was to call her beloved daughter, Jane and entrust the “Eucharistic Ministry kit” to her and told her to return it to St. Joachim church.
Mrs. Dolly and her husband Arthur Cassel who celebrated their 67th Wedding anniversary in our church two years back were such great friends of mine. Once I told them that my father even though a fisherman, never took me for fishing for the fear that I may end up in that profession. Keeping that in mind, on one of my day off both of them suddenly appeared in our Rectory and took me for fishing in Alameda. We had lots of fun talking to each other and drinking coke even though we did not catch any fish! We compensated our failure to catch fish by eating fish in Black Angus prior to returning home after our fishing expedition! She leaves me with so many fond memories. Again and again she would tell me that St. Joachim is her second home. She took pride in everything happening in St. Joachim. When it became clear that her end is near, I visited her quite a few times. Every time she would welcome me with so much of fondness. She deeply loved all her children, they in turn adored her. On February 18th at 2.15 pm she peacefully died in her bed surrounded by her beloved children. In her death St. Joachim has lost a beloved daughter and for me a great friend.

Entre los muchos voluntarios que ayudan con el buen funcionamiento de nuestra Iglesia, los Coordinadores de Misa son muy especiales. Todas las actividades en nuestra Iglesia están orientadas finalmente a la celebración de la Eucaristía, lo que el Vaticano II llama como “la fuente y la cumbre de la vida cristiana.” Es el Coordinador de Misa quien delega, prepara y supervisa todos los arreglos antes de la celebración de la Eucaristía. La Iglesia de San Joaquín ha sido bendecida con algunos Coordinadores de Misa y sus asistentes increíbles quienes meticulosamente llevan a cabo sus responsabilidades. Agradezco a cada uno de ellos. Que Dios les bendiga abundantemente a ellos y a sus familias.
Un tal Coordinador de Misa ha sido la Sra. Dolly Cassel. Ella fue la Coordinadora de la Misa del Domingo a las 7:30am. Ella estaba orgullosa en ser una Coordinadora de Misa y llevó a cabo la responsabilidad de una manera muy sencilla. Ella tenía la habilidad especial de llegar a todos los involucrados para preparar las cosas. Todos sus asistentes la amaban y ella miraba a su vez a cada uno de ellos como si fueran unas personas muy especiales. Uno nunca oía de ella ningún comentario negativo de nadie. Ella era un verdadero tesoro para la Iglesia de San Joaquín. Por lo tanto, en un Domingo por la mañana a la edad de 92 años cuando ella vino y me dijo que le gustaría retirarse de la posición de Coordinador de la Misa, le dije, “Dolly, usted puede retirarse sólo cuando muera.” Siendo una gran alma, ella tomó muy en serio mis palabras y continuó llevando a cabo su ministerio con alegría habitual. Sin embargo, un Domingo por la mañana la vi sentada en la silla -muy inusual de su carácter. Así que le pregunté, “Dolly, ¿estás bien?” Ella me dijo: “Sabe usted Padre, esta mañana me levanté a las 3:00am y me dio miedo que si me iba a la cama otra vez quizás no me levantaría a tiempo para venir a la Misa de la mañana. Así es que tomé un baño inmediatamente y esperé hasta las 7:00am y me vine a la Iglesia.” Sus palabras rompieron mi corazón e inmediatamente le dije, “Dolly, ahora es tiempo que usted se retire de ser una Coordinador de Misa.” Ella amablemente aceptó mi sugerencia. Sin embargo, incluso a esta edad frágil continuó llevando la Eucaristía a los enfermos y limitados a casa. Uno de sus últimos actos antes de su muerte fue llamar a su amada hija, Jane y confiarle el “equipo del Ministerio Eucarístico” y le dijo que lo devolviera a la Iglesia de San Joaquín.
La Sra. Dolly y su esposo Arthur Cassel, quienes celebraron su 67º aniversario de boda en nuestra Iglesia hace dos años, fueron grandes amigos míos. Una vez les dije que mi padre a pesar de ser un pescador, nunca me llevó a pescar por el temor que terminara en esa profesión. Teniendo eso en cuenta, en uno de mis días de descanso, de repente se aparecieron en nuestra rectoría y me llevaron a pescar en Alameda. Nos divertimos mucho conversando y bebiendo coke a pesar de que no pescamos ningún pez!
Compensamos nuestro fracaso de pescar algo yendo a comer pescado en Black Angus antes de regresar a casa después de nuestra expedición de pesca! Ella me deja con muchos recuerdos. Una y otra vez ella me decía que San Joaquín era su segundo hogar. Ella se sentía orgullosa de todo lo que sucede en San Joaquín. Cuando se hizo evidente que su fin estaba cerca, la visité unas cuantas veces. Cada vez ella me acogía con tanto cariño. Amaba profundamente a todos sus hijos, y ellos a su vez la adoraban. El 18 de Febrero a las 2:15pm ella murió pacíficamente en su cama rodeada de sus hijos amados. En su muerte San Joaquín ha perdido a una hija querida y para mí a una gran amiga.
