In 1991 an Air Canada flight ran into big trouble. Passengers were enjoying an in-flight movie on the Boeing 767 when the jumbo jet’s massive engines abruptly stopped. At first only those without earphones on noticed anything. However, soon it was apparent the jet was in trouble. The pilot came on the speaker system and announced that Flight 143 would be making an emergency landing in a nearby aerodrome. The 69 people on board were trapped in an agonizingly slow but inescapable descent to earth. For several minutes a desperate silence hung over the cabin. Then fear gave way to screams of anxiety as the landing neared. All the latest technology could not keep the jumbo jet in the air. What had happened was this. The electronic digital fuel gauge was out of order. So the flight crew had depended on the figures given them by the refueling crew before takeoff. But someone on the refueling crew had confused pounds with kilograms. Therefore, eight hundred miles short of its destination, that mighty jet simply ran out of fuel and was forced to make an emergency landing. Fortunately no one was injured. A multimillion-dollar airplane, headed in the right direction, but running out of fuel – that’s what’s happening to a lot of people today. They have everything in life going for them — a new car, a wonderful home, a good education, and a good job — and one day they wake up out of fuel. At the center of their lives there is emptiness. They don’t know why they are living. There is nothing outside of themselves to live for. Don’t let that happen to you. Jesus tells us that the power for successful living comes from God. It is the promised gift that Jesus offers us. “Peace be with you,” he says. “My peace I give to you, not as the world gives you. Let not your hearts be troubled, believe in God, believe also in me.”

A lawyer’s dog, running around town unleashed, heads for a butcher shop and steals a roast. The butcher goes to the lawyer’s office and asks, “If a dog running unleashed steals a piece of meat from my store, do I have a right to demand payment for the meat from the dog’s owner?” The lawyer answers, “Absolutely.” “Then you owe me $8.50. Your dog was loose and stole a roast from me today.” The lawyer, without a word, writes the butcher a check for $8.50. The butcher, with a feeling of satisfaction, leaves. Three days later, the butcher finds a bill from the lawyer for $100– for consultation.

A lawyer and a Pope die at the same time and go up to Heaven together. After they’ve been there awhile, the Pope notices that the lawyer gets a little better treatment than he does. So he calls St. Peter over to ask him and says, “You know that lawyer I came up here with? Well, I’m not complaining, but he seems to be treated a little better than I am… he’s got a better house and more servants. I don’t understand. I was a Pope and served God all my life; this guy was just a lawyer. What gives?” St. Peter responded, “You have to understand – we get Popes all the time; this is the first lawyer we’ve ever had.”

Los pasajeros estaban disfrutando de una película durante el vuelo en Boeing 767 cuando los motores masivos del jet jumbo se detuvieron abruptamente. Al principio sólo aquellos sin auriculares lo notaron. Sin embargo, pronto fue evidente que el jet estaba en problemas. El piloto anunció en el sistema de altavoces que el vuelo 143 estaría haciendo un aterrizaje de emergencia en un aeródromo cercano. Las 69 personas a bordo fueron atrapadas angustiosamente en un lento pero inevitable descenso a la tierra. Por varios minutos un silencio desesperado cayó sobre la cabina. Entonces el miedo dio paso a gritos de ansiedad cuando el aterrizaje se acercaba. Toda la tecnología moderna no pudo mantener el jumbo jet en el aire. Lo que había pasado era esto. Jesús nos dice que el poder para una vida exitosa viene de Dios. Es el regalo prometido que Jesús nos ofrece. “La paz este con vosotros”, dice. “Mi paz os doy, no como el mundo la da. Que el corazón no se turbe, cree en Dios, creed también en mí”.
El perro de un abogado, corriendo alrededor de la ciudad desatado, se dirige a una carnicería y roba un asado. El carnicero va a la oficina del abogado y le pregunta, “Si un perro corriendo desatado roba un pedazo de carne en mi tienda, ¿tengo derecho a reclamar el pago de la carne del dueño del perro?” El abogado responde, “Absolutamente.” “Entonces me debes $8.50. Su perro andaba suelto y robó un asado de mí hoy.” El abogado, sin una palabra, escribe al carnicero un cheque de $8.50. El carnicero, con una sensación de satisfacción, se va. Tres días más tarde, el carnicero encuentra una factura del abogado por $100 – por consulta.

Un abogado y un Papa mueren al mismo tiempo y suben al cielo juntos. Después de que han estado allí un rato, el Papa observa que el abogado recibe un tratamiento un poco mejor que él. Así que él llama a San Pedro para preguntarle y le dice, “¿sabes que yo vine aquí con el abogado? Bueno, no me quejo, pero parece que lo tratan un poco mejor que a mí… tiene una casa mejor y más siervos. No entiendo. Yo fui un Papa y le serví a Dios toda mi vida; este chico fue simplemente un abogado. ¿Qué da?” San Pedro respondió, “tienes que entender – tenemos Papas todo el tiempo; Este es el primer abogado que hemos tenido”.
