There’s a marvelous scene in the Old Testament that sort of illustrates in a very stark fashion something of what is occurring in today’s scriptures. It is the scene where the famous prophet Elijah, being pursued by his enemies, takes refuge in a cave and waits for the Lord to tell him what to do. He is prompted to go to the mouth of the cave, and there is a great wind that sweeps through the valley, breaking the trees it is so powerful. But the Scriptures say, the Lord was not in the wind. Then there is a terrible earthquake and the mountains tumble. But the Lord, we are again informed, was not in the earthquake. Then a huge fire; but there again, the Lord was absent. Finally, Elijah heard a still small voice, and he promptly covered his face with his mantle out of reverent fear of God’s holy presence. A still, small voice whispering of the breeze. God speaks. And in much the same way He spoke again, and for a final and complete time, when He spoke His ultimate Word to the human race for all ages. For this time He began to speak in the soft cries of a little baby boy in Bethlehem.

Composer and performer Bradley James has set Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s teachings and prayers to music in the internationally acclaimed recording, Gift of Love: Music to the Words and Prayers of Mother Teresa. Bradley remembers her teaching: “Mother said we don’t have to go to Calcutta to help the poor; rather, we must help them right in front of us.” He applied this lesson when he encountered a homeless beggar on the streets of San Francisco. Bradley placed some money in his metal cup, then reached out and shook the man’s hand. The recipient gave him a big smile, and the two exchanged names and small talk. Bradley recalls: “Then he pulled me a little closer and said, ‘Thanks for the money, but what I really needed was a handshake’” [Cf. Susan Conroy, Our Sunday Visitor (Oct. 19, 2003ft, p. 17.] Indeed, what was remarkable in this incident was not the coin, but the gift of human dignity and the love of Christ that Bradley James brought to the beggar through the handshake and his fraternal presence. In effect, Bradley replicated in his life and experience the joyful mystery of the Lord’s Visitation (cf. Lk 1:39-45) described in today’s Gospel.

Christmas telegram: The preacher and his pregnant wife had left for a conference in France, forgetting to give instructions for the banner which was to decorate the hall at the Christmas Carol Concert, the following weekend. The parish secretary was astonished to receive a telegram from France which read simply: UNTO US A SON IS BORN. NINE FEET LONG AND TWO FEET WIDE. REV. AND MRS. JOHNSON.

Hay una escenamaravillosa en elAn!guo Testamento que ilustra de una manera muy simplealgo de lo que ocurre en las lecturas de hoy. Es la escenadonde el famoso Profeta Elías, perseguido por sus enemigos,se refugia en una cueva y espera que el Señor le diga quéhacer. Se le pide ir a la boca de la cueva y hay un gran vientoque barre a través del valle, quebrando los árboles de tanpoderoso. Pero las escrituras dicen, el Señor no estaba en elviento. Luego hay un terrible terremoto y las montañasretumban. Pero el Señor, nuevamente se nos dice, no estabaen el terremoto. Luego un gran incendio; pero una vez más,el Señor estaba ausente. Finalmente, Elías oyó una vocecita, yrápidamente cubrió su rostro con su manto de temorreverente a la Santa presencia de Dios. Una voz pequeña. Noen el viento, o en el terremoto, o en el fuego. Sino en elsusurro de la brisa. Dios habla. Y en la misma forma hablóotra vez, y por un !empo final y completo, cuando habló Supalabra final a la raza humana para todas las edades. Por este!empo Él comenzó a hablar en el suave llanto de un pequeñoniño de Belén.

El Compositor e intérprete Bradley James ha puesto lasenseñanzas y oraciones de la Madre Teresa de Calcuta amúsica en la grabación de renombre internacional, Regalo deAmor: Música a las Palabras y Oraciones de Madre Teresa.Bradley recuerda su enseñanza: “la Madre dijo que noenemos que ir a Calcuta para ayudar a los pobres; por elcontrario, debemos ayudarles justo en frente de nosotros.” Elaplicó esta lección cuando se encontró con un mendigo sinhogar en las calles de San Francisco. Bradley colocó dinero ensu copa de metal, después se acercó, y estrechó la mano delhombre. El receptor le dio una gran sonrisa, y los dos intercambiaron nombres y charlaron. Bradley, recuerda:”entonces él se me acercó un poco más y dijo, ‘Gracias por eldinero, pero lo que realmente necesitaba era un apretón demanos'” [Cf. Susan Conroy, Our Sunday Visitor (19 de Octubrede 2003), p. 17.] De hecho, lo que fue notable en esteincidente no fue la moneda, sino el don de la dignidadhumana, y el amor de Cristo que Bradley James le dio al mendigocon el apretón de manos y su presencia fraternal. Enefecto, Bradley replicó en su vida y experimentó el misteriogozoso de la Visitación del Señor (cf. Lc 1:39-45) que se describeen el Evangelio de hoy.
