It is not uncommon to hear the question, “Why does the church collect money?” or “Why do the churches ask for money?” The answer to this question is a counter question, “Why do the families need money?” or “Why do the families depend on monthly salary?” The families depend on the monthly salaries to pay for the house rent, to pay for PG&E, to buy grocery, to pay for the tuition fee of children, to purchase dress, to pay for medicine etc. So also the church needs money to pay for the PG&E, to pay for the insurance, to repair and to maintain the buildings, to purchase liturgical things, to pay salary to the full time and part time employees, to pay for the food and maintenance of the priests, to build new buildings to cater to the ever growing needs, to help the poor and the needy etc.
Just as a family needs money to run the family and just as a church needs money to keep it going, so also the diocese needs money to keep going. Like the church and the diocese you do not see or hear the government asking for money. But it collects money by way of taxes whether you like it or not. It is out of the taxes it collects from us, the government is able to meet all the expenditures. Therefore, any failure to pay the tax will lead you to count bars in the prison! Like the government, the church and the diocese do not impose or collect tax on us. It appeals to us to contribute. Many Christian denominations such as the Pentecostal churches, the Seventh day Adventists etc, demand 10% of the income of their followers. And it is surprising that the followers these denominations consider it their religious duty to contribute 10% of their income to their church. And they do contribute without fail and feel proud of doing so. (What has surprised me most is that those Catholics who have gone and joined the Pentecostal churches, too, faithfully contribute 10% of their income without fail and speak proudly of doing so!) But we Catholics who are much more educated and affluent than the followers of the Pentecostal and the Seventh Day Adventists fail to contribute even 2% of our income to the church.
St. Joachim church is a unit of the diocese of Oakland. We belong to the diocese of Oakland. As an organization, our church has no existence apart from the diocese. We share in its achievements and failures. We share in its concerns as much as we share in its strengths. The diocese needs our help to maintain its personnel, buildings, to impart our faith to our children and youth, to provide education to our less fortunate children and migrants, to provide counseling to couples who are struggling in their marital relationship, to care for the aged and dying, to care for its aged priests, to take care of the poor and homeless etc. This week is the week of Bishop’s Appeal – a week to show your generosity to the diocese. Remember the story of Abel and Cain. Yes, God loves a generous giver.

No es infrecuente escuchar la pregunta, “¿por qué la Iglesia colecta dinero?” o “¿por qué las Iglesias piden dinero?” La respuesta a esta pregunta es otra pregunta, “¿por qué necesitan dinero las familias?” o “¿por qué las familias dependen del salario mensual?” Las familias dependen de los salarios mensuales para pagar el alquiler, para pagar el PG & E, comprar abarrotes, pagar la matrícula de los niños, comprar ropa, para pagar medicina etc. Así también la Iglesia necesita dinero para pagar PG & E, pagar el seguro, para reparar y mantener los edificios, para comprar cosas litúrgicas, para pagar sueldos a los empleados a tiempo completo y tiempo parcial, para pagar por la comida y el mantenimiento de los Sacerdotes, para construir nuevos edificios para satisfacer las necesidades de crecimiento, para ayudar a los pobres y los necesitados, etc. Al igual que una familia necesita dinero para funcionar como familia, y así como una Iglesia necesita dinero para mantenerla, así también la Diócesis necesita dinero para seguir adelante. Como la Iglesia y la Diócesis, no ves o escuchas al gobierno pidiendo dinero, pero recauda dinero a través de impuestos te guste o no. Es por los impuestos que recauda de nosotros, que el gobierno es capaz de satisfacer todos los gastos. Por lo tanto, cualquier falta de pago de impuesto te llevará a contar barras en la prisión! Como el gobierno, la Iglesia y la Diócesis no impone o cobra impuesto sobre nosotros. Apela a nosotros para contribuir. Varias denominaciones cristianas como las iglesias pentecostés, el séptimo día, adventistas etc., exigen el 10% de los ingresos de sus seguidores. Y es sorprendente que los seguidores de estas denominaciones consideran su deber religioso de contribuir con el 10% de sus ingresos a su iglesia. Y ellos contribuyen sin falta y se sienten orgullosos de hacerlo. (Lo que me ha sorprendido más es que los católicos que se han ido a esas iglesias pentecostés, también contribuyen fielmente el 10% de sus ingresos sin falta y hablan orgullosamente de hacerlo!) Pero nosotros los católicos que somos mucho más educados y ricos que los seguidores de los pentecostés y los adventistas del séptimo día, no contribuimos ni el 2% de nuestros ingresos a la Iglesia. La Iglesia de San Joaquín es una unidad de la Diócesis de Oakland. Pertenecemos a la Diócesis de Oakland. Como organización, nuestra Iglesia no tiene existencia aparte de la Diócesis. Compartimos sus logros y fracasos. Compartimos sus preocupaciones tanto como compartimos sus puntos fuertes. La Diócesis necesita nuestra ayuda para mantener su personal, edificios, para impartir nuestra fe a nuestros niños y jóvenes, para proporcionar educación a los niños y los migrantes menos afortunados, para brindar asesoramiento a las parejas que están luchando en su relación matrimonial, para el cuidado de los ancianos y moribundos, para cuidar de sus sacerdotes mayores, cuidar de los pobres y desamparados etc. Esta semana es la semana de la Apelación del Obispo – una semana para mostrar tu generosidad a la Diócesis. Recuerda la historia de Abel y Caín. Sí, Dios ama a un dador generoso.
