As believers we thank God whenever we feel we have received a favor from God such as when we pass a difficult examination, when we get a good job, when we build a new home, when we make a successful journey, when we get a life partner of our desire etc. But we hardly thank God for the inborn abilities we have – ability to breath, to see, to hear, to touch, to speak etc. Yet these are the most fundamental abilities an individual needs to survive meaningfully in this world. Lack of one such inborn ability can completely alter one’s life. Just imagine if one is born without the ability to hear. We will never be able to hear the laughter of a child, we will nev-er be able to have a meaningful conversation with our friends, we will never be able to hear the music of the forest and the singing of birds, we will never be able to listen to the mellifluous sound of the instruments etc. Yet we hardly think of our ability to hear as matter to thank God for. A few months back I happened to see the won-der in the face of a boy who received the ability to hear his father’s voice for the first time. Fortunately it is still available in the YouTube video under the title “Miracle!! Deaf boy hears his father’s voice for the First time.” I would greatly advice you to watch this video clip – a sci-entific miracle – to appreciate what we are blessed with. The video clip is about a boy named Grayson Clamp who was born deaf as he was born without an inner nerve that takes the sound to his brain. After a careful study the doctors at the South Carolina School of Medicine im-planted an auditory brain stem in his head and asked Grayson’s father to speak to him first. When his father called his name, the boy listened to the sound of human voice for the first time and you must see the reaction of the boy – a billion dollar reaction. Then you begin to ap-preciate what you and I take it for granted and hardly think of something to be grateful to God.
An old man is talking to the family doctor. “Doctor, I think my wife’s going deaf.” The doctor answers, “Well, here’s something you can try on her to test her hearing. Stand some distance away from her without facing her and ask her a question. If she doesn’t answer, move a little closer and ask again. Keep repeating this until she answers. Then you’ll be able to tell just how hard of hearing she really is.” The man goes home and tries it out. He walks in the door and asks, “Honey, what’s for dinner?” He doesn’t hear an answer, so he moves closer to her. “Honey, what’s for dinner?” Still he gets no answer. He repeats this several times, until he’s standing just one foot away from her. Finally, she answers, “For the elev-enth time, I said we’re having meat loaf!”

Como creyentes le damos gracias a Dios cuando senti-mos que hemos recibido un favor de Dios como cuando aprobamos un examen difícil, cuando conseguimos un buen trabajo, cuando construimos un nuevo hogar, cuando hacemos un viaje exitoso, cuando tenemos una pareja de vida de nuestro agrado, etc. Pero nosotros casi no damos gracias a Dios por las habilidades inna-tas que tenemos – capacidad de respirar, ver, oír, tocar, hablar, etc. Sin embargo estas son las habilidades más fundamentales que un individuo necesita para sobrevi-vir significativamente en este mundo. La falta de una habilidad innata puede alterar completamente nuestra vida. Imagínense si se nace sin la capacidad de oír. Nunca podríamos oír la risa de un niño, nunca sería-mos capaz de tener una conversación significativa con nuestros amigos, nunca podríamos escuchar la música del bosque y el canto de los pájaros, nunca podríamos escuchar el sonido melifluo de los instrumentos, etc. Sin embargo, no pensamos en nuestra capacidad para oír como algo para agradecerle a Dios. Unos meses atrás me tocó ver la maravilla de un niño quien recibió la capacidad de escuchar la voz de su padre por prime-ra vez. Afortunadamente aún está disponible en un YouTube vídeo bajo el título “Milagro!!!! Un niño sordo escucha la voz de su padre por primera vez.” Les quiero aconsejar de ver este vídeoclip – un milagro científico – para apreciar con lo que somos bendecidos. El videoclip es sobre un chico llamado Grayson Clamp quien nació sordo, sin un nervio interior que lleva el so-nido a su cerebro. Después de un cuidadoso estudio, los médicos de la Facultad de Medicina de Carolina del Sur implantaron un tallo cerebral auditivo en su cabeza y le pidieron al padre de Grayson que hablara con él primero. Cuando su padre llamó su nombre, el niño es-cuchó el sonido de la voz humana por primera vez y hay que ver la reacción del chico – una reacción de un billón de dólares. Entonces comenzarás a apreciar lo que tú y yo tomamos a la ligera y no pensamos que es algo por lo cual debemos estar agradecidos con Dios.
Un hombre está hablando con el médico de familia. “Doctor, creo que mi esposa se está quedando sorda.” El doctor responde, “bien, hay algo que usted puede probar con ella para examinar su audición. Póngase lejos de ella sin que le mire y le pregunta algo. Si ella no contesta, muévase un poco más y vuelva a pregun-tarle. Repita esto hasta que ella responda. Entonces usted será capaz de saber que tan mal es realmente la sordera.” El hombre vuelve a casa y lo intenta. Él cami-na hacia la puerta y le pregunta, “Amor, que hay de ce-na?” Él no escucha una respuesta, por lo que se mueve más cerca de ella. “Amor, que hay de cena?” Todavía no obtiene ninguna respuesta. Repite esto varias ve-ces, hasta que él llega frente a ella. Finalmente, ella contesta, “Por undécima vez, te dije que cenaremos torta de carne!”
